1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how CaptRead ("we", "us", "our") handles information in connection with the CaptRead Windows application, theme packs, digital content, and the website captread.com.
CaptRead is designed with privacy in mind. The CaptRead Windows application collects no personal data, uses no cookies, and does not track users.
2. Data Collection in the CaptRead Application
The CaptRead Windows application does not collect personal data, does not store user profiles, does not use analytics, does not use cookies, and does not track usage, behavior, or device information. CaptRead itself does not receive or store the text you read, translate, or look up. Summarizing text and recognizing text in images (OCR) run entirely on your device.
2.1 Features that use online services — some features need an online service to work, and only send anything when you use them:
• Read aloud: the text you have selected is sent from your device to Microsoft's online text-to-speech service (the Read Aloud voices also used by Microsoft Edge), which returns the audio.
• Translate: the text you have selected is sent to Google Translate.
• Dictionary look-ups: the word you look up is sent to public dictionary services (the Free Dictionary API at dictionaryapi.dev, and Wiktionary).
• Offline voices (optional download): if you choose to download a higher-quality offline voice, the app downloads that voice file directly from public hosting — Hugging Face (huggingface.co) or GitHub (github.com). No text you read is sent, but those hosts see the download request and your IP address and handle it under their own privacy policies. Once downloaded, the voice reads aloud fully offline.
These requests go directly from your device to those services, not through CaptRead's servers. The services receive the text or word together with technical information your internet connection necessarily includes, such as your IP address, and handle it under their own privacy policies. In addition, the application contacts captread.com to check for updates and current discounts, and to sign in if you choose to use a CaptRead account.
3. Website Data Collection
The website uses Google Analytics to understand visitor numbers and general traffic patterns. Cookies are only set if you provide consent.
3.1 Data collected by Google Analytics — depending on your consent, Google Analytics may collect: anonymized IP address, device type, browser type, approximate geographic region, pages visited, time spent on pages, and referral sources. This data is aggregated and not used to identify individuals.
3.2 Optional account — you can also create a CaptRead account on the website (separate from buying a theme) to keep track of which themes and collections you own and view your purchase history. If you do, we store your username, email address, and a securely hashed password — never your password itself, see Section 6 — directly in our own database, along with which purchases are linked to your account. You can view, correct, or permanently delete this account and its data yourself at any time from your profile page, or by emailing us.
3.3 Basic first-party visit logging — separately from Google Analytics, captread.com's own server briefly notes visitor IP addresses to count visits and keep the site running smoothly (for example, preventing automated abuse). This is deleted automatically within seconds to minutes and is never linked to any account, shared, sold, or used to identify or track individuals.
4. Purchases and Donations
All purchases and donations are processed entirely by Lemon Squeezy. CaptRead does not receive, store, or process personal data related to payments.
Lemon Squeezy may collect: name, email address, payment method details, billing information, transaction history, and IP address (for fraud prevention). CaptRead never sees or stores this information.
5. Data Sharing
CaptRead does not sell your data, and does not share it with third parties for their own purposes. The third parties that receive information are: Lemon Squeezy (purchases and donations, Section 4) and Google Analytics (website visits, Section 3), and — only when you use the corresponding feature in the application — Microsoft (read aloud), Google (translate) and the dictionary services named in Section 2.1. No other third parties receive any information.
5.1 TikTok — captread.com maintains a TikTok account to share our own marketing screenshots and videos, which we create ourselves. This never involves your personal data, or any information about site visitors or customers — no CaptRead user data is sent to or shared with TikTok.
6. Data Security
If you create a CaptRead account, your username, email, and password-derived hash are stored in our database — your actual password is never stored, only a one-way cryptographic hash of it, so even we can't see it. Beyond an optional account, CaptRead does not store payment information or billing details. License keys are delivered securely via Lemon Squeezy.
7. Children's Privacy
CaptRead does not knowingly collect data from children under 16.
8. International Data Transfers
Google Analytics, Lemon Squeezy, and the online services used by the application's read aloud, translate and dictionary features (Section 2.1) may process data outside the EU. These providers are responsible for ensuring adequate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
9. Your Rights (GDPR)
If you've created a CaptRead account, that data (username, email, purchase history) is held directly by us, and you can exercise your GDPR rights — access, correction, deletion, portability — directly with CaptRead: view and edit it from your profile page, delete your account yourself at any time, or email us at the address below.
For data processed by Lemon Squeezy or Google Analytics instead (payment details, analytics), or by the online services behind the application's read aloud, translate and dictionary features (text or words you chose to send), you may request access, deletion, correction, data portability, or object to processing, or withdraw consent — these requests must be directed to the relevant provider, since CaptRead never holds that data itself.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
CaptRead may update this Privacy Policy at any time. Changes take effect once published on captread.com. This version was last updated on 24 September 2026.
